Introduction to Kundalini Yoga with Gurmukh.

My interest in Kundalini Yoga began roughly 4 years ago, which funnily enough coincided with the beginning of a spiritual awakening in my life. This interest remained purely philosophical up until about a year ago when a good friend introduced me to the practical application, an hour long video class with renowned Kundalini Yoga teacher Gurmukh.

Now I’m not going to lie to you, after stumbling, panting and sweating through my first session I wasn’t too keen on joining Gurmukh for a second, never mind a third! For anyone who’s ever tried other types of yoga like Ashtanga or Asana which are mostly based on slow and precise movements synchronised with the breath, Kundalini might be a bit of a departure. Each session is broken into four parts which starts off slow with an awakening then the tempo is upped as you move on to energise your body after which the real fun begins(get ready to sweat!) with the full on aerobic strengthening before you finally wind back down and relax with a gong meditation.

The attention is put more on the practical doing rather than spending years perfecting a single posture or pose.

Its not easy and you will hurt in places you never knew existed but that’s the whole point of Kundalini, to push yourself beyond your perceived limits. The attention is put on the practical doing rather than spending years perfecting a single posture or pose. That’s not to say there isn’t perfection to be attained but its more a perfection of centering yourself through endurance and focus. The overall result is your mind, body and spirit come into alignment in a holistic sense, while this in turn helps you to overcome challenges and in general be more content in your day-to-day life. Another huge benefit I noticed was that my meditations after each session have been some of the deepest and easiest to enter I’ve ever experienced, now whether this is down to the spiritual power of Kundalini or pure exhaustion…I’m not quite sure, yet.
