Mantras are words or phrases we repeat during meditation. They’re intended to help guide and focus our minds while we practice. Different words or phrases have different intentions and uses; in this article, we’ll specifically go over Hindu mantras for peace of mind.
Normally a guru would provide the mantra for you during a meditation session. When you’re on your own, it’s perfectly fine to find a word or phrase that speaks to you and helps you achieve your goals.
Here are my suggestions for Hindu mantras for positive thinking and peace of mind.
5 Hindu Mantras for Peace of Mind
1. Aum (“om”)
Represents awake, dreaming, deep sleep, as well as conscious, unconscious and subconscious states.
The simplest and most easily recognized of the Hindu mantras. A single word said in four sounds, with the last being silence.
Aum may be simple, but it is also powerful. There’s a great deal of meaning packed into it. The sound and vibration of the mantra have a calming feel to it, making it the perfect way to achieve focus as you meditate.
2. Om Namah Shivaya
Adoration to Shiva; I honor the divinity within myself.
Another well-known mantra you may already be familiar with.
Shiva is known as the destroyer deity, but in this context, it is the supreme reality. Shiva is the name given to the consciousness that dwells in us all. This mantra removes all negative influences, bringing us to inner and outer harmony.
3. Om Gam Ganapatayae Namaha
Salutations and prostrations to Lord Ganesha.
This mantra is aimed at removing obstacles, for success and wisdom. By breaking away those things which hinder us, this Hindu mantra for peace of mind helps us achieve focus on our meditation goal.
4. Om Shri Hanumate namaha
Salutations to Lord Hanuman.
This mantra is in reverence to anuman. It invokes unbounded love and reveals the power of the soul that can triumph over adversity. It gives strength and success in devotional activities as well.
With this mantra, I and many others feel a sense of peace and oneness with the world around me. This Hindu mantra for peace of mind not only gives me peace of mind but helps to connect me with others in a similar state.
5. Om Mani Padme Hum
The method of wisdom.
This six-syllable mantra is simple to say, but dense with meaning. There is no real single translation — the words that make up the mantra are symbolic, and brought together are dense with meaning. In essence, it’s about achieving enlightenment and purifying the body through a method of wisdom that brings inner focus and peace.
The 14th Dalai Lama summed it up as such; “Thus the six syllables, om mani padme hum, mean that in dependence on the practice of a path which is an indivisible union of method and wisdom, you can transform your impure body, speech, and mind into the pure exalted body, speech, and mind of a Buddha[…]”
Final thoughts
There are many thousands of mantras in Hindu and Buddhist texts; trying to condense them to any shortlist is always a challenge. These five listed above are simple to say and dense with meaning, which is why I felt they were the best 5 to start off with.
These Hindu mantras for peace of mind will help you achieve focus and inner peace while you meditate, bringing you closer to achieving your goals and desires during your meditation sessions.
