Who is God Narashimha?
Narasimha is a god who is one of the reincarnations of the god Vishnu. The stories depict the god Narasimha as a being with the head and claws of a lion and the body of a man. The name of the god Narasimha is a combination of two words ‘Nara’ which means man and ‘Simha’ which means lion.
The god Narasimha’s appearance is a straight forward representation of his character. He embodies the zeal for justice and how fierce it can be. Narasimha was born from the desire of the god Vishnu to protect his Devotee Prahlada, a prince who was persecuted by his father the evil king Hiranyakashipu.
Brahma granted king Hiranyakashipu a boon. Neither man or animal could kill him, nor at day or night and many similar conditions which made him almost impossible to kill. With his boon, the evil king oppressed and rained terror across the world even the gods couldn’t kill him. Vishnu who is known as a protector god reincarnated to this form, i.e. his avatar Narasimha for the sole purpose of destroying this evil.
Narasimha is a protector god and also known by names like Narasingh, Nrusingha, Narasingha, Narasinghar, and Narasimba. All of Vishnu’s avatars have natures that embody eternity, bliss and knowledge.
Hindus worship the god Narasimha in 74 forms. The different weapons wielded and different postures distinguish the different forms. Amongst the 74, nine forms are the most revered. The Nava Narasimha is the nine forms that are the most revered.
The nine forms are:
- Ugra Narasimha
- Vīra Narasimha
- Kroddha Narasimha
- Vilamba Narasimha
- Yoga Narasimha
- Kopa Narasimha
- Aghora Narasimha
- Lakshmi Narasiṁha
- Sudarsana Narasimha
All the forms of Narasimha are fierce, but amongst them, The Lakshmi Narasimha is considered the most benign. In this form, Maha Laxmi his consort accompanies him.
Despite his fierce appearance and character, he is considered to be most compassionate and will come to help, when his people are in trouble and call on his name.
How to Chant the Narasimha mantra
One must chant the Narasimha mantra with the utmost focus and devotion. The chant goes like
“Om hrimksaumugramvirammahavivnumjvalantamsarvatomukham.
Nrsimhambhisanambhadrammrtyormrtyumnamamyaham.”
The Narasimha maha mantra must be chanted 108 times or 11 times daily for 40 days to obtain full benefits and fruitful results.
This chant, in particular, is the Narsimha maha-mantra which mean the great Narasimha’s prayer. It is important to know the meaning of the chant so that when you chant it, you can also focus on the meaning and the chant.
Narasimha Mantra Translated in English
The Narasimha maha mantra when translated means “Oh angry and brave great god Vishnu, let your fire and heat permeate everywhere. Oh god Narasimha, You are omnipresent. You are the end of death, and I surrender myself to you.”
The mantras are prayers of devotion to the god Narasimha, and as your praises and devotion reach him, he will bless you. The Narasimha mantra when chanted will help manifest Narasimha’s power in your life, thereby removing the difficulties and obstacles in your life.

The Narasimha Pranama Mantra
The Narasimha panama mantra is a powerful chant. The chant goes like this;
“Namaste narasimhaya, prahladahlada-dayine, hiranyakasiporvaksah, sila-tankanakhalaye.
Ito nrsimhahparatonrsimho, yatoyatoyamitatonrsimhah, bahirnrsimhohrdayenrsimho, nrsimhamadimsaranamprapadye.”
The word pranama is a word used to greet someone respectfully. The Narasimha pranama mantra greets the god Narasimha with the utmost respect and praise to show one’s devotion to the powerful and compassionate God.
The Narasimha Pranama Mantra Translated in English
The Chant means “I offer my respectful greetings or salutations to lord Narasimha, who is the giver of joy to the great king Prahlada and whose nails to the chest of the demon Hiranyakasipu are like a chisel to stone.
Lord Narasimha is omnipresent; here and there, Wherever I go, Lord Narasimha will be there. He is inside my heart and outside. I surrender to the lord Narasimha, the origin of all and the most excellent refuge.”
This mantra is said to be powerful and is very effective against debts. Reciting the Narasimha Pranama mantra will dissolve debts however acute or severe. It also provides further protection from problematic situations.
Sri Narasimha Maha Mantra
The Sri Narasimha maha mantra is said to be the essence of all Kavacha mantra (protective chants) in the Shastras (ancient holy Hindu texts). The Chant goes:
“Ugramvirammaha-vishnumjvalantamsarvatomukham
nrisimhambhishanambhadrammrityurmrityumnamamyaham.”
Sri Narasimha Maha Mantra Translated in English
The chant when translated would mean “I bow in reverence to lord Narasimha who is heroic and ferocious like Vishnu. He burns all. He is terrific and auspicious. He is the end of death personified.”
This sacred mantra is written on a small piece of bark which is then sealed in a capsule along with a Basil leaf which is considered holy or with a flower petal from the flowers offered to the god Narasimha.
There is an elaborate ritual that is performed to invite the deity to reside in the Kavacha. Then, the Kavacha or protective amulet can be worn like a pendant tied with a string around the neck or tied around the upper left arm for women and upper right arm for men.
Wear the amulet at all times for protection from various harmful circumstances.
Here are some steps or necessary procedure one needs to follow before chanting any Narasimha mantra:
- One must bath or wash one’s hands and feet before one begins to chant, to purify your external body.
- One must always sit in the North direction when chanting the Narasimha mantra.
- One must devote oneself entirely to Lord Narasimha to feel his protection and positive cosmic energy.
- One must face or look at a picture, idol or the sky when doing the puja (worship).
- Wearing yellow clothes is a sign of faith and devotion, so it is highly recommended.
- One must recite the mantras several times regularly. The most basic requirement is chanting eleven times daily for forty days.
- The auspicious time for chanting the Narasimha mantra is early in the morning before most people wake up.
- Thursday is an auspicious day for chanting the mantra for the first time. So, if you are looking to start making this chant a part of your daily life, start on a Thursday.
- It is recommended to chant the Narasimha mantra 11, 108, 216, 324 or 1008 times depending on the severity of your situation or your will because these are auspicious numbers.
- To facilitate your chanting, you can use a prayer bead necklace made from a Tulsi (Basil) or Rudrakasha (a traditional prayer bead). The prayer bead will help you keep count.
