What are Archangels?
Archangels are of the highest rank of Angels, because they hold certain powers that are assigned to them by the Creator, God, himself. Archangels are not the only supreme spiritual beings, in fact there are many divisions of Angels, each assigned a special task. The order goes as follows:
The first sphere of Angels will not make themselves known to humans, and they don’t look after humans at all. Their duty is to look after Creation, and Divine Order, and they are:
- Seraphim – they are Angels that take care, and protect the God’s throne. They are the highest rank of Angels, and the name Seraphim means the ‘burned ones’.
- Cherubim – it is said that they have four faces, representing the beings on earth: a man, an ox, a lion, and an eagle. They have wings covered with eyes. They are protector of the Tree of Life in the Garden of Eden, and God’s Throne.
- Thrones – they deliver God’s justice, and stand as symbol of God’s authority. Their symbol is the throne, and they may be often depicted as wheels.
Then, comes the second sphere of Angels of Dominion, Virtues, and Powers, which are assigned duties of leadership, protecting God’s values, and supervising that the Spirit world remains in order. This rank of Angels will rarely make themselves visible to humans, as their primary job is not to communicate with humans. However, in times of great distress, they may choose to guide humans.
In the third sphere of highest rank of Angels are Rulers, Archangels, and Guardian Angels. These are the Angels assigned to look after humans, protect them, and guide them. These are Angels assigned duties related to humankind, so they are always there for people, and nations.
What’s the Archangels story?
Archangels were assigned by God to deliver His messages to humankind. They each have different powers, and purposes, but they are always there if you need them. In the Bible, there are only three Archangels mentioned: Gabriel, Raphael, and Michael. However, it is believed that there are many more of them.
Archangels are spirits created by God, the Creator, and they have very defined powers, and duties to fulfill in the spirit world. It is said that Archangels played an important role on fighting darkness during the biblical time of Adam and Eve. Some tales tell the story of how the fallen angels, led by Lucifer, made Adam and Eve eat the forbidden apple. The fallen angels wanted to manipulate humanity for their own evil gains. God send Archangels to fight back the fallen angels, and save God’s creation, humans.
Archangels are those that serve in positions of teaching and leadership in the spirit world. That’s how they want to serve the creator. Archangels are the ones who teach angels to be messengers and also organize their operations. Archangels often deliver messages of high significance; they have a greater capacity than angels to make themselves known.
What is the purpose of an Archangel?
Archangels are the forces that will drive you and push you towards the aim of creation, and awakening. To be seen as pictures, symbols, individuals, they can be iconized through times, but they represent the arches of creation, they are merely serving intent, and have no conscious free will. They are like huge waves. You can’t escape, except by riding them, or swimming in their direction. The waves are formed, and creation follows on their path.
How many Archangels exist and what are their duties?
There are at least 12 known Archangels, but not all of them are known to work with humans as close as some others. Archangels’ purpose is to help all humanity, not only individuals that choose to work with them. For this reason, some Archangels will work closely with anyone that calls upon them, and other Archangels will work only with those people they want to, or the ones who are gifted in spiritual work.
There are 7 main Archangels you can freely work with:
1) Archangel Michael
Archangel Michael is portrayed with a golden sword. You can imagine Michael swooping in and cutting the negative energy rope with his sword while doing cord-cutting meditation.
When you need protection of some sort, you can call Michael. Michael will be there to help you if you’re scared or worried about your safety. When you feel lost, he gives strength and support, and he loves to help healers do their work.
2) Archangel Raphael
Archangel Raphael helps with physical healing,. When you’re sick, he’s there for you, and if you’re a healer, or if you work in healthcare, then you can trust that he’s always at your side. Raphael can direct you into cleansing anxiety, and tension when it comes to mental health, or addiction so that you can regain your inner peace. He will always guide you in the direction of peace.
3) Archangel Gabriel
The Archangel Gabriel is God’s messenger, the angel of speech. In order to call Gabriel, you do not have to be a skilled communicator. Gabriel will help determine the best way to express it if you’re having trouble talking or putting something into sentences.
4) Archangel Ariel
Connect with Archangel Ariel if you love animals and think about protecting our earth! She is the angel of nature, protecting the wealth of the earth, the environment and all species. When you want to interact more profoundly with nature, you should invite Ariel. You should invite her to go hiking, swimming or biking with you.
5) Archangel Azrael

The mission of Archangel Chamuel is to help bring the world to peace. When you’re suffering from anxiety, struggling in a relationship or have a hard time forgiving others, you should call him. Can you work with Archangels and if so, how?
You can certainly work with Archangels. Archangels are beings of God’s creation, so as long as you will be working with a good intention, you can call upon Archangels for help.
First of all, you would need to know who they are, and what are their powers. You will have to research their favorite food, colors, herbs, etc., so you can build an altar to place these offerings. The altar can be as small, or as big as you want it to. You will have to choose a high place in an area of your home that people don’t usually walk on. Don’t build your altar in your bedroom, it is not good manners for Spirits. This will be the place where you sit to meditate with your Archangel, and where you will do spiritual work with them.
Once you found where you want to build the altar, aka resting place for Archangels, you need to cover it with a white cloth, and place a candle for the Archangel, a photo of the chosen Archangel, a cup of water, and food or gifts of your choice. If you can’t keep the altar exposed all the time, you can gather these tools in a box, and build the altar only when you can work with it.
Whenever you want to honor your Archangel, express gratitude, or do spiritual work, you can light a fresh white candle, or a colored candle that matches their favorite color, have a glass of water, and call upon them. You can also research the Archangel’s Prayer to easily connect with your chosen Archangel.
How do you know what Archangel to call upon when you need help?
If you have just started working on your spiritual gifts, or if you feel called to work with Archangels, but you don’t know which one to ‘choose’, you can either:
- Choose to call upon the Archangel you feel most connected to, or you like most
- Choose to call upon the Archangel that governs your Sun Sign:
- Archangel Raphael for Air Signs
- Archangel Michael for Fire Signs
- Archangel Gabriel for Water Signs, or
- Archangel Uriel for Earth Signs.
If you have been working or meditating with Archangels for quite some time now, you can choose to call upon the one that will aid you best in your spiritual work. You will know whom to call forth because of their special powers, for example:
- Healing Spiritual Work, call upon Archangel Raphael
- Love Spiritual Work, call upon Archangel Chamuel
- Protection Spiritual Work, call upon Archangel Michael
- Etc.
What kind of spiritual work can you do with their help?
Archangels can help you amplify the process, and the results of your spiritual work, through their special powers. You can perform any kind of work with them, and contrary to popular belief, you can even get revenge on someone, but only if it is justified. Archangels are spirits that hold within light, and dark, both. So, you can work with both light, and dark, but you have to be careful not to use Archangels to carry your dark works all the time. Your spiritual work should be focused on lightwork.
This means that you can do spiritual work like energy healing, and cleansing, physical healing, building love around you, intuition works, etc. Unless you have a strong psychic gift on healing, don’t attempt to heal anyone else besides yourself, even with the help of Archangels, because you risk to take the illness upon you, while the other person will still stay ill.
However, if you don’t have a psychic gift, you can still work with Archangels on matters of health, love, wealth, protection, heal, and cleanse, but try to focus your work on yourself, and your family.
What do you have to be cautious about (what are the dangers)?
As in any other spiritual work, you have to be careful about what you are doing, and what or who you are working with. If you are working with Archangels, just because they are angels, and they are supposed to help humanity, doesn’t mean that they will not turn on you. It doesn’t happen out of the blue, if it happens that Archangels punish you, it is because you have done something wrong.
Some reasons why Archangels may punish you, or refuse to work with you, are:
- Your intent is to destroy someone, just of pure jealousy on your part.
- Your work is not justified, which means that if you want to fire a colleague from the job, just because you don’t like them, or because they said one mean word to you, it is not justified to what you want to happen to them. The Karma you want to throw back, should match the action that hurt you.
- You may promise Archangels something, and not deliver after you have got your blessing from them. It shows you are a liar, and unreliable.
- They may refuse to work with you, because you are not meant to, you don’t have enough psychic power, or for whatever other reason.
If Archangels don’t want to work with you, you will know because the candle you lit for them may blow out itself, you want hear or feel anything, or you may have strange occurrences, or a gut feeling. If Archangels refuse to work with you, you shall not get discouraged, because you have your spirit guides, your ancestors, and your patron gods to work with.
FAQs
What is the difference between an angel and an archangel?
Archangel is the name of ‘the office’ that each Angel has. A good example is to think of how all human beings are the same, but we can differentiate between different professions, and call them: doctors, engineers, lawyers, etc. So, Archangels are angels, with special duties, and powers.
The other spiritual beings that are simply called ‘angels’ are of a lower position, only because they don’t have the training, or the expertise of an Archangel. However, an angel can not become an Archangel, but they can grow within their own powers, and aid humanity.
What is the difference between archangels and guardian angels?
Archangels have the duty to look out after all humankind, all nations, and races. Everyone can work with them, and ask them to help in particular matters. You can work with Archangels daily, but you can’t ask them to help you on a daily basis. You also have to differentiate between the work you do, and which Archangel you ask for help, because they don’t share the same powers. Most spiritual workers choose to acknowledge Archangels, give gratitude on a daily basis, but only call upon them on important matters.
Guardian Angels are the Angels assigned to each person when they are born. It is said that one person has at least 2 Guardian Angels, and there is not a single person without his own Guardian Angels. You can work with your Guardian Angels on a daily basis, they will help you navigating the physical world, and the spiritual world. They act as the first barrier to the spiritual world, because they will protect you from anything. They may not have the powers of an Archangel, but they are the only one that will fight for you no matter what.
Can a human become an archangel?
Spiritual workers, and religious people, have different opinions on whether a human being can become an Archangel, or not. The most shared belief is that a human being cannot become an Archangel, and they can’t even become an Angel. A human being soul is completely something else, from Angels spirit. It can happen that an Angel will choose to be born on Earth for an important purpose, and then they will return to their previous post in the spiritual realm. However, it cannot happen vice versa. A human being spirit, and an Angel spirit have different purposes in the spiritual realm.
